Freedom Sunday :: The Porch Light

Sunday, September 25 is Freedom Sunday, a day set aside to recognize the fact that slavery still exists. According to International Justice Mission there are chilling statistics:
– There are an estimated 45.8 million slaves worldwide.
– $150 Billion dollars is generated by slavery each year
– Over 2 million children are enslaved in sex trafficking.

Globally IJM works to fight against slavery. Locally, in the state of Florida, The Porch Light, a ministry affiliated with The Florida Baptist Children’s Home, and a ministry that Emmanuel supports works to provide quality, holistic, Christ-centered care for young girls who have been rescued from sex trafficking.

Here are some facts provided by The Porch Light:

  • Florida has the third most reported cases of sex trafficking in the United States. (National Human Trafficking Resource Center, 2014)
  • 1 in 6 endangered runaways are likely to become victims of sex trafficking. (National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, 2014)
  • The average age of girls coming into the care of The Porch Light is 15-16.

So how can we respond?

– Learn about the problem and more about these organizations on their websites. IJM   The Porch Light
– Pray for the rescue of many. Prayer resources are available here.
– Talk to your children, family, and community members about sex trafficking. Check out this prevention idea list.
– Give to IJM or The Porch Light. You can do this through EBC or on their websites. In addition, The Porch Light has a gift registry set up where you can purchase needed items for the safe house.
Be aware of companies known to use unfair labor  and those that employee high standards.
Advocate for the needs of those in slavery.
